Tom Sagar wins Knighton On Friday afternoon Mid Wales basked in a Mediterranean heatwave as the competitors gathered for the 3rd Round of ACU Edmondson Racing British Enduro Championship near Knighton. The golden sun shone down on the drying fields of yellowing corn as the riders walked the tests but it was not to last as heavy overnight rain drenched the Radnor Forest.
On Saturday morning the first 2 riders were flagged away at 9.00am as the rain began to ease but the clouds were low and the first cross country test had to be cancelled due to the poor visibility.
The Championship class had 4 laps. Steve Holcombe (KTM) coped best with the slippery conditions and he won the first MX test. Danny McCanney (Beta) was quickest through the trees on the 3 timed cross country tests but Tom Sagar (Colwyn Bay KTM) was consistently quick on both test and he took the win. Danny McCanney was 2nd and the best E3. Steve Holcombe was 3rd and he won the E1/4. Brad Freeman in 4th was the best E1/2. Jamie McCanney (Husqvarna) was 5th and Jamie Lewis (MPS Racing) salvaged a 6th despite totally worn brake linings. Carl Jones crashed in the rocky gully on his penultimate MX test and he was injured. He finished the day but retired.
Joe Wootton - in the E3 class - was the Best Expert. His times would have placed him in the top ten. Jack Edmondson was the runner up and the best E1/2. Fraser Flockhart (3rd) won the E1/4 and Luke Lusher (6th) was the best E2. Sean Buchan and Antoine Criq ran out of fuel. Jon Hunt (Sherco) won the Clubman class. Adam James was 2nd and Jamie Jenkins was 3rd. The tough conditions were as hard on the machines as they were on the riders. Lee Green seized his motor on the MX test. Andrew Bisset lost his rear sprocket and Jack Staines snapped his chain. Retro stylist Aaron Edwards was running on tubes and he had a puncture. In the Ladies class, Jane Daniels made a clear sweep of all 5 tests. Katie Walker was 2nd and Glesni Jones was 3rd. Over 40s 1st Russell Millward 2nd Andrew Reeves, 3rd Richard Hay. Over 50 1st Paul Armstrong 2nd Emlyn George 3rd Robert Murfin.
Day 2 dawned fresher and brighter. The schedule for the Championship/Experts was cut to 3 laps and an audible sigh of relief went around the paddock as the Vets schedule was cut to 2 laps It was like the Ralgex was being passed around. Tom Sagar was again unstoppable. Jamie McCanney improved on his Day 1 result to take runner up and Danny McCanney was 3rd. Jamie Lewis' fresh pads gave him the confidence to push harder into 4th and Steve Holcombe eventually crossed the line in 5th after a Torville and Dean moment on the final hill. He was lucky to get away with only a broken subframe. Brad Freeman and Jack Rowland were less lucky. Brad lost all but his first gear on the opening lap and Jack caught a rock and cracked his clutch casing on the last test of the day.
Joe Wootton was again the best Expert. Jack Edmondson in 2nd was the best E1/2, Fraser Flockhart (3rd) was the best E1/4. Anyoine Criq (6th) was the best E2Kalem Hicks' front end washed out on his 2nd MX test and he took a ugly tumble. Adam James won the Clubman class. Jon Hunt was the runner up and the best E1/4. Thomas Ellwood in 3rd was the best E2. Mark Hillier-Rees in 12th was the best E3. Jamie Jenkins retired when he clouted his forks and the stanchion jammed.
Over 40s 1st Andrew Reeves 2nd Russell Millward 3rd Richard Hay. All the best to Mike Turner who collected a fistful of sore ribs.
In the Over 50s Paul Armstrong was 1st. After a 10 year lay off Glyn Richards rode on Sunday only and finished 2nd. David Johnson was 3rd.
