Expected to get the 2014 season off to an explosive start David Knight, Graham Jarvis and Jonny Walker go head to head at Eddy’s Xtreme Tong on January 12.
Joined by Paul Bolton, Ben and Dan Hemingway plus Danny McCanney this weekend’s Eddy's Xtreme promises to be one of the most eagerly awaited preseason Hard Enduro races seen for some time.
Billed as the opening round of the 2014 British Extreme Enduro Championship, it’s defending champion Knight that starts as the rider to beat. In 2013 the Manxman dominated the two and a half hour race from start to finish. Making short work of tough terrain that Tong has in abundance, the then Honda mounted Knight led the field home for a clear win.
But in 2014 the stakes are higher. Now focused on his return to Hard Enduro, Tong should mark his debut ride on two-stroke Sherco machinery. With Jarvis and Walker on the starting line, the Manxman will be determined to deliver a winning ride in preparation for next month’s Hell’s Gate Hard Enduro in Italy.
Struggling to match Knight’s pace in 2013, Jarvis returns to Tong intent on improving his result this time around. Dialled in to his new Husqvarna, a strong ride at Tong will be essential in his build up to Hell’s Gate. With Tong known for it’s difficult riverbed and slab rock climbs, the trials like terrain could favour Jarvis.
Recovered from his recent New Year’s elbow operation, Tong will be Walker’s first return to the track. With his sights set on a podium result, the 2012 champ won’t want Knight or Jarvis having things all their own way.
While the trio of Jarvis, Knight and Walker start as favourites, Bolton, McCanney and the Hemingways won’t be far away. Bolton and the Hemingways are regular front-runners in Hard Enduro circles, while McCanney finished third overall in last year's tortuous Tough One. With all four riders capable of producing a podium result, this year’s Eddy’s Extreme is set to be the best yet.
With 175 riders entered, practice gets underway at 8.45am sharp followed by the Sportman’s race at 10.15am. The Pro/Expert/Clubman main event starts at 12.30pm.
