2012 Husqvarna ACU British Sprint Enduro Championship enjoys sun-baked finale…
E-mail Print

19 June 2012

With the majority of Britain under attack from unseasonably bad summer weather the final stop of the 2012 Husqvarna ACU British Sprint Enduro Championship enjoyed glorious sunshine, which ensured perfect racing conditions during both days of the hotly contested event.

Making his first appearance in the championship Husqvarna's factory team rider Matti Seistola wasted little time in adapting to the sprint enduro racing format. Although slowed by numerous mistakes during the opening two laps at round nine, Seistola soon found his pace and topped the final four special tests to claim a comfortable win. At round ten, the Husqvarna rider completed a mistake free day to secure victory at the final round of the season.

For the newly crowned Elite class champion Jordan Rose, Saturday’s round nine got off to a disastrous start when a stone jammed in his chain during the opening lap. Losing over 35 seconds as he was forced to stop and remove the offending stone, Rose spent the remainder of his day battling hard to recover lost time. Setting a fast pace during the final stages of the day, Rose finished as runner-up to Seistola, clinching the Elite championship in the process.

Putting in a strong ride, KTM's Tom Church finished less than seven seconds behind Rose to place third. Daryl Bolter finished ten seconds behind Church to end his day in fourth while Honda mounted Lee Edmondson quickly acquainted himself with his new bike to place fifth.

With Seistola once again leading the way on Sunday’s round 10, the fight for second was fought out between Bolter and Kawasaki's Ryan Voase. Setting a fast pace during the closing stages of the day, Voase reeled in Bolter and finished second to record his best ever finish in the BSEC. Bolter placed third. Rose again fought back from a disappointing opening lap to end his day fourth. Edmondson once again put in a solid ride to round out the top five.

Finding the exciting mix of woodland, motocross track, and flowing grass tracks to his liking, Gas Gas' Danny McCanney was in a confident mood at round nine. Trailing initial pace setter Husaberg's Alex Rockwell by seven seconds at the end of lap one, McCanney quickly overhauled Rocky to end the day almost 37 seconds in front. Leading the way from the beginning of round ten, Danny delivered another unbeatable ride to claim the final victory of the season and with it secured the Under 23 championship.

Although hoping to use his motocross experience to his advantage around the Canada Heights circuit, Rockwell was unable to consistently match the pace of his fellow Manxman and had to be content with placing second at both rounds nine and ten.

Finishing third at round nine, Husqvarna's Jack Rowland improved his pace at round ten by switching to a larger capacity machine. Although ending his day over one-minute adrift of the leading duo, Rowland produced one of his best results to date. Lewis Belfield (KTM) and Scotland's Frazer Norrie (KTM) enjoyed a weekend long battle for fourth and fifth. At round nine, Belfield got the better of Norrie to finish fourth, while Norrie pipped Belfield by six tenths of a second at round ten to steal fourth.

In the Under 19 class KTM's Steve Holcombe wrapped up his BSEC season with a perfect scorecard by claiming wins at round nine and ten. After a difficult start to round nine, Holcombe capitalised on a crash by early race leader Joe Wootton (Kawasaki) to grab his ninth victory of the year. Putting in a mistake free ride at round ten, the KTM rider topped the standings for the final time this year.

Husqvarna's Robert Johnson delivered his best ride of the season to place a solid second at round nine. With James Dent (KTM) finishing closely behind in third, Stuart Owen (Yamaha) narrowly beat Wootton to finish fourth.
At round ten, Wootton avoided making any mistakes to place as runner up to Holcombe. Johnson eventually held off a late charge by Dent to finish third while Owens completed the top five.

In the 125 Youth Cup, Husaberg's Jamie McCanney returned from injury to secure a double victory. Although lacking some race pace, he eased his way into the event and topped the class standings each day. KTM's Brad Freeman continued to impress with another strong ride in the series at Canada Heights. Finishing as runner up to McCanney at both rounds, Freeman also wrapped up the 125 Youth Cup championship.

At round nine, TM's Josh Gotts rode a lonely race to finish third with Jack Staines (Yamaha) and Lee Sealey (KTM) completing the top five. Sealey reversed the positions of round nine to place third at round ten while Staines got the better of Gotts by four seconds to finish in fourth.

In the Expert class the battle for championship honours was an intense one between Husaberg's Tyson Maytom-Jones and KTM's Richard Ely. Maytom-Jones led the proceedings early during round nine until a mechanical issue dropped him out of contention allowing Ely to claim the win. The Husaberg rider's luck ran out at round ten when problems arose again allowing Ely to power through to secure the Expert championship.

At round nine, Hart placed a close second to Ely before upping his pace to win the final round of the series. With Honda's James Jackman ending round nine in third, Daniel Beaven (KTM) placed fourth while Craig Reynolds (KTM) rounded out the top five. With Hart winning round ten, Ely fended off stiff competition from Beaven to finish second. With Beaven securing third, Jackman finished fourth, while Kalem Hicks (KTM) completed the top five.

TM's Gethin Francombe continued his winning ways to claim a commanding double victory in the Clubman class. Darren Osbourne (KTM) finished behind the TM rider to place second beating Husqvarna mounted Jamie Jenkins, Ryan Poolman (KTM) and early leader Ian Smart (KTM). Francombe again topped the standings at round ten. Absent from round nine, Mark Houson claimed second at round ten. Jason Corden (KTM) completed the top three while Osbourne and Jenkins rounded out the top five.

In the Women's class, KTM mounted Jane Daniels secured another double victory to remain unbeaten this season. Fionn Griffiths (KTM) defended a strong fight from Katie Bullock (Husqvarna) to place second both days while Stephanie Rowe (AJP) finished fourth.
