Steve Holcombe wins Tarenig

ACU Edmondson Racing British Enduro Championship
Llanidloes 15/16th August Hafren Dirt Bike Club

After a break of 5 years the British Enduro Championship returned to the picturesque mid Wales town of Llanidloes this weekend. With successful World and European rounds to their credit, the Hafren Dirt Bike Club is one of the most respected clubs in Britain and - hosting the 7th and 8th rounds of the 2015 ACU Edmondson Racing British Enduro Championship - they once again proved they have lost none of their ability and enthusiasm.

The start was in Llanidloes Rugby ground. The weather had been changeable during the week and there had been heavy rain but the forecast for the weekend was fair. On Friday night the sky had been clear and there was dew on the grass on Saturday morning. The first two riders were flagged away at 9.00am for the short ride to the first test across the fields by the river - within walking distance of the start. 2014 Champion Tom Sagar #1 (Colwyn Bay KTM) was accompanied by Steve Holcombe #3 (Beta) as Danny McCanney was still recovering from a knee injury. Steve did his best in Danny's absence and he set the fastest time on the first test. Jamie McCanney was 2nd quickest and David Knight was 3rd. On their second run Jamie set the quickest time by the narrowest of margins from David Knight but as the group took the road to the Teranig Steve Holcombe was the leader.

The cross country test and the service area was at the Glanwy Caravan Park near Llangurig. From there the course looped around the Teranig Forest. There were 3 laps for the Championship class. Steve Holcombe crashed on his 4th test but he picked himself up without too much damage to himself or his times.

Before the finish the riders returned to the MX test at Llani for 2 more runs. Steve Holcombe won the first day by 28 seconds from David Knight and Jamie McCanney was 3rd. Joe Wooton was 4th, Tom Sagar 5th and Jamie Lewis 6th. Jack Edmondson scored his best finish in 7th. Daryl Bolton was 8th, Jack Rowland 9th and Josh Gotts 10th. Owain Humphreys retired with an existing groin stain. For the purists there was an old school working area and a parc ferme.

The Expert clas was closely contested with MPS Racing's Jake Subachus (Sherco) wining 3 out of five tests to take the best Expert and E1/4 but it wasn't a clean sweep as runner up Adam James E1/2 set the fastest time on the first test and David Kip Herring E2 was quickest on the last test to take 3rd. Alun Jones in 12th was the best E3.

Youth and E1/2 machines dominated the Clubman class as the Walton family's boy Alex won the class ahead of John Ridgway and Jack Cadwallader. Dan Mundell in 4th was the best E1/4 and William Hughes (5th) was the best E2. Haden Maller (10th) was the best Expert E3.

There was a welcome return to the BEC for Eco Warrior Juan Knight who recycled a pair of his brother David's old tyres to win the Vets with times that would have put him in 13th overall. Vets class leader Jamie Jenkins gave the 2003 BEC Champion a hearty wave goodbye before each test and concentrated on gathering in 17 points as runner up. Russell Milward was 3rd. Richard Hay 4th and William Jones 5th.

Gavin Johnston was the best of the Over 50s. Paul Armstrong was runner up and Emlyn George was 3rd.

Rhian George won the Women's class despite injuring her knee  Glesni Jones 2nd, Ellie Cooke 3rd and Kate Smith 4th.

Daniel Davies was the best Sportsman ahead of Chris Edwards and Nigel Griffin. Richard Penfold had a day to forget when his chain got jammed in his front sprocket on the first test and he had to push back to the paddock.

With all the riders safely gathered in, Clerk of the Course Rowan Jones circled the paddock like the good shepherd to obtain feedback before planning any changes to the day 2 course and times.

As the Tarenig was the last major event before the ISDE, ACU Team Manager Dusty Martin took the opportunity to present the British teams. Seniors standing left to right Joe Wootton, Jamie McCanney, Tom Sagar, David Knight, Jamie Lewis and Jack Rowland. Juniors kneeling Rob Johnson James Dent, Josh Gotts and Lee Sealey.

In the evening the riders retired to the Marquee for Music and light refreshments. The winning ticket of Lee Edmondson's ISDE fundraising raffle was drawn and the winner of a brand new Beta 300rr was John Gotts. The Welsh team also had a raffle and thanks to ET James for their support.

Day 2 The  clouds were as high as the anticipation in the paddock. The first 2 riders were flagged away at 9.00am for the short ride across the field to the opening test. David Knight drew a line in the dew damp grass and set the fastest time closely followed by Jamie McCanney and Joe Wootton. Jamie fought back on the second run and took a 2 second lead with him on the road to Llangurig. Joe Wootton was 2nd and David Knight was 3rd. Disaster struck 9th placed Jack Rowland when his brand new ISDE bike seized on the first test.

The bog at the Glangwy test deteriorated throughout Day 1 and reminded everyone that fortune favours the brave. Steve Holcombe powered through to set the fastest time and take a lead by 2 tenths of a second. Jamie McCanney was 2nd and Tom Sagar was 3rd.

On the going the organisers had laid out alternative loops and the Championship/Expert classes were treated to a good thrashing up and down some steep sections of recent felling.

On the 4th test Steve Holcombe extend his lead by 1.5seconds over Jamie McCanney. Thomas Sagar was 3rd, David Knight 4th, Joe Wootton 5th and Jack Edmondson 6th.

Around 3.00 pm the Championship riders returned to Llani for their final 2 tests. Steve Holcombe made no mistakes and finished overall winner to take maximum points from the event. Jamie McCanney was runner up and David Knight was 3rd. Tom Sagar was 4th, Jamie Lewis 5th, Joe Wootton 6th, Jack Edmondson 7th, Daryl Bolter 8th, Joshua Gotts 9th and Fraser Flockhart 10th. Eaun McConnell had a disappointing end to the weekend and rode back home as flat as his rear tyre. Lee Sealey retired after snapping his gear lever.

Jake Subachus completed the Expert double to score maximum points for the weekend. Thomas Ellwood was the runner up and the best E2. David Kip Herring was 3rd. Mark Hillier Rees lost al the teeth on his front sprocket but he tightened his chain and his resolve to rattle across the finishing line.

Alex Walton won the second day and collected maximum Clubman points. Dan Mundell was the runner up and John Ridgway was 3rd.

In the Over 40 class Steve Plain took pity on Juan Knight when he saw Jamie Jenkins fitting fresh rubber and he gave Juan a new rear tyre. It must have worked as Juan won the second day. Richard Hay was 3rd, Mark Houson 4th and Russell Millward 5th.

Paul Armstrong was the best Over 50, Gavin Johnston was runner up and Gary Jones was 3rd, Daniel Davies won the Sportsman class. Rhian George completed the double with a heavily bandaged knee.

Hafren Dirt Bike Club and Aberystwyth MCC did a great job as usual. On behalf of all the riders and supporters - thanks again for an unforgettable weekend.
