Jamie McCanney wins Knighton BEC
CWAC - Knighton - 1/2nd August 2015

After a lengthy break the 3rd round of the 2015 ACU Edmondson Racing British Enduro Championship returned to Knighton this weekend. The event was organised by the Central Wales Auto Club and sponsored by P3. The weather was bright but cool. Due to an outbreak of Bird Flu in Lancashire DEFRA had posted an exclusion zone around the usual venue at the Chicken Farm but the club had worked with the land owner to pitch the start nearby.

The 42 miles lap was ridden 3 times and there were 2 tests. Test 1 - a grassy field at the Warren last used in 2011 - was set aside for spectators while access to the 2nd test - above the farm containing "the Gully" - was strictly limited.

The field of 125 riders were flagged away from 9.00am on Saturday morning. Championship leaders Jamie McCanney (Husqvarna) and Steve Holcombe (Beta) continued their EWC rivalry. Steve made a good start by winning the first 2 tests and establishing a 6 second lead before Jamie pulled back the deficit and took the day by 11 seconds. David Knight (KTM) in 3rd fought off a spirited challenge from Joe Wootton by 1 second. 2014 Champion Tom Sagar was 5th, Jamie Lewis 6th, Daryl Bolter 7th, Jack Edmondson 8th, Lee Sealey 9th and Josh Gotts completed the top ten. Danny McCanney was a non starter due to injury. Jack Rowland retired with a broken rear spindle. James Dent also retired with a mechanical breakdown.

Bradley King was the best Expert ahead of Adventure Spec sponsored Aled Price and David Herring. Dan Mundell from Barnstaple won the Clubman class. Jordan Ridgway was runner up and Hayden Maller was 3rd. Rhian George was the best of the Women. Jamie Jenkins topped the Over 4os and Mark Houson led the Over 50s home. Sponsor Chris Edwards won the Sportsman class. Andrew Hunt was 2nd in his first BEC and he loved it.

The times were generous with no riders incurring time penalties. Less than a dozen riders DNF'd.

On Day 2, Jamie McCanney won the double in a close battle with David Knight who finished a very close runner up. After 8 tests only half a second separated the two. Steve Holcombe was 3rd. Joe Wootton 4th, Tom Sagar 5th, Jamie Lewis 6th, Daryl Bolter 7th, Jack Edmondson 8th, Lee Sealey 9th and Rob Johnson 10th. James Dent had a better day on a borrowed Edmondson Racing Beta 430 and narrowly missed a top ten finish.

“I’m really happy to have won here in Knighton” said a pleased Jamie McCanney, “I knew this weekend was going to be incredibly tough to take the win with the nature of the special tests. It’s mainly settled on the grass here with no really technical sections to make up or lose time. I only made one mistake all day and that was on the first test so I’m glad I was able to keep things consistent.”

MPS Racing's Jake Subachus was the best of the Experts. Bradley King was the runner up and Kip Herring was 3rd. Luke Flack was going well until dropped 4 minutes after a crash on the last "Gully"  test. Unfortunately for Luke he sustained ligament damage to his hand. Get well soon.

Dan Mundell clinched a double win in the Clubman class ahead of Jordan Ridgway. Jack Cadwallader improved on Day 1 to take 3rd. Rhian George (Women), Jamie Jenkins (Over 40) and Mark Houson (Over 50) all dominated their classes and harvested maximum points for the weekend.

Once again the Central Wales Auto Club demonstrated their propensity to overcome adversity and host a cracking event.
